East County Financial Freedom Day and Homeownership Fair - Financial Counseling SessionThe 4th Annual East County Homeownership Fair Brought Education, Solutions, and Hope for Many Homeowners from San Diego East County Communities

The 4th Annual East County Homeownership Fair was held on Saturday, November 1, 2008, from 9:30 am - 2:00 pm at the Ronald Reagan Community Center, located at 195 East Douglas Avenue in Downtown El Cajon. The event was a huge success, bringing over 250 community participants.

The Homeownership Fair, sponsored by U.S. Bank, was presented by El Cajon Community Development Corporation, The City of El Cajon, and the Housing Opportunities Collaborative. Additional sponsor partners included Bank of America, Union Bank of California, and WaMu. Regional Partners included The San Diego East County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Rancho San Diego-Jamul Chamber of Commerce, and the East San Diego County Association of Realtors (ESDCAR).

The annual event offered services and information for both prospective and current homeowners seeking guidance and counseling regarding foreclosure prevention. The fair had event exhibitors from real estate, lending, homeownership counseling, foreclosure prevention, and counseling professionals. Multiple workshops were offered on down payment assistance, foreclosure prevention, home buying, financial literacy, and more. One-on-one confidential counseling was also available, and there was even a savings safari area with kid's activities. In the Savings Safari, each child had the opportunity to learn about Saving Money, Budgeting, and Money Basics. Lessons, interactive learning techniques, and youth financial literacy activities were supplied by WaMu. The Savings Safari's main focus was to give children early tools in which to build a solid foundation of financial principles. This opportunity gave youth a basic understanding of how important money is and how to develop a plan for it.

The Housing Opportunities Collaborative (HOC), a coalition of nonprofit organizations and agencies in the San Diego region, presented a special free Home Clinic for distressed homeowners having trouble paying their mortgage. The Home Clinic offered participants access to existing resources and services pertinent to difficulties in making monthly mortgage payments. They had 130 people attend the activities, and 72 families received one-on-one counseling. As the statistics indicate, this event was very beneficial to the community.

If you missed this year's event, be sure to check back for updates on the 2009 Homeownership Fair as it approaches.
