Over the past five years, Downtown El Cajon has experienced continuous private and public development. Pedestrians walking down the main commercial corridors admire the recent development projects which are creating an ideal place to live, work, and play.

Privately, property and business owners are enhancing building facades and beautifying outdoor patios. In 2009, both Glamour Girlz, at 124 East Main Street, and VIP Clothing and Tailoring, at 155 East Main Street, had their buildings painted and new unique signage installed. The once underutilized patio next to the historical building at 169 East Main Street now provides tropical landscaping and a shaded seating area for event participants and daily shoppers. The other three outdoor patios on East Main Street were also remodeled with new shading structures, patio furniture, and landscaping. These are only a few private improvement projects out of fifty-eight that have been completed within the last five years.

There are other private projects currently in progress. For example, the building occupied by Great Stuff, at 456 North Magnolia Avenue, is currently completing a façade renovation that will include new business signage. Construction is in full swing at 198 West Main Street where Ross Dress for Less and 24 Hour Fitness will be opening store locations soon. Many more development projects recently approved by the Design Review Commission will soon begin construction.

Publicly, the City of El Cajon has invested approximately $6 million in public improvement projects. In 2009, the Streetscape Improvement Project on Main Street and Magnolia Avenue was completed adding decorative sidewalks, new street lights, shade trees, benches, trash receptacles, and more for pedestrians to enjoy. For more information on public projects click here.

Property and business owners in Downtown El Cajon’s Property Based Improvement District are eligible for $30,000 Design & Façade Improvement Grants. To learn more about how property and business owners can improve building façades and business signage contact Edith Saldivar, Economic Development Coordinator, at (619) 401-8858.
